Brown Marmorated Stink Bug

Please read important information below regarding the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug season:
Who does this notice affect?

This notice is of interest to clients in the import and shipping industries, associated with the importation of targeted break bulk and containerised vehicles, boats, machinery and machinery parts shipped from the United States from 1st September 2018 to 30 April 2019 inclusive.

What has changed?
The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has developed measures to manage the 2017-18 seasonal risk of brown marmorated stink bug infestations in sea cargo shipped from the United States. The 2018-19 measures are largely the same as the 2017-18 measures, with season dates, treatments, and requirements for management of target goods unchanged.

There are some changes to the targeted goods. This is based on detections made and information gathered from surveillance conducted during the 2016-17 response. The 2017-18 target goods will: include machinery parts shipped as break bulk (not containerised) include machinery from additional tariffs exclude lower risk goods such as small all-terrain vehicles, jet skis, canoes and buoys. AQIS Commodity codes will be created to assist with the exclusions of lower risk goods.

The 2018-19 measures will remain in place for the entire season unless pest infestations are detected. Should this occur, the department may impose emergency requirements similar to those implemented during the 2017-18 season. The department is also monitoring the risk of brown marmorated stink bugs from other parts of the world and will develop measures if required.

We received advice from the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources informing us that the department has found significant numbers of Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs (BMSB) on arrival in Australia in various types of containerised goods arriving from Italy.

These detections indicate that BMSB are sheltering in a range of containers and goods outside of those captured by existing measures.

TO MANAGE THE RISK POSED BY THESE GOODS, ALL CONTAINERISED GOODS SHIPPED VIA SEA CARGO FROM ITALY THAT ARRIVE IN AUSTRALIA BETWEEN 17 JANUARY 2018 AND 30 APRIL 2018 WILL BE REQUIRED TO UNDERGO AN APPROVED TREATMENT ONSHORE.

Please note that treatment of your shipment from Italy during this period is MANADORY and unfortunately incur additional costs.

The department has also published the following Import Industry Advice Notice 04-2018 – Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) Risk Season 2017-18 Mandatory treatment for containerised goods from Italy and is forwarded for your attention.

Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact us.
Kind Regards,

The Team at DSH Global Logistics
